Beauty in Our Everyday

by Michaella McClendon

A secret to cultivating beauty in the everyday.

My friend, do you wish to know a secret in cultivating beauty in the everyday? You must first receive in order to give.

Beauty has a place to uniquely meet you and transform you in the midst of whatever surrounds your days. Know your season, and allow yourself to BE in your season. Right now, my minutes and hours are filled with raising precious babies and the adventure of being self-employed. An endlessly humorous circus of diapers and emails.

There isn’t much margin for how I once imagined beauty, I must own to it. My mind is often a loud and scattered place. But I’m finding it’s far more simple and fulfilling than any grandiose idea I had. Some days—it’s slipping out to the porch to drink in the last few rays of the setting sun. Some days, breathing deep the fragrance of my tomato vine as I gather the red little gems with my three-year-old son. It may be cliche, but it IS all the little things. And as I practice, because sometimes I’m the noise, and allow these kisses of beauty to spill into my soul— I find they spill over and multiply in my tired hands.

I allow these kisses of beauty to spill into my soul— I find they spill over and multiply in my tired hands.

Suddenly there’s space and grace enough for a thoughtful note or a jar full of daisies and fire wheels for the kitchen table. And it kisses you back again and again and again.

When you allow what is truly in your day, instead of the expectation of what should be in your day, the reward that fills you – that pulls a slight smile – may surprise you. Slow down and receive. Be. Then respond with what fills your soul.
